| RESEARCH BRIEF The sympathetic nervous
system is triggered as part of the "Fight or Flight"
mechanism. When a person is startled or threatened,
the sympathetic nervous system makes their heart
rate increase, their body temperature rise, their
sweat glands create sweat, their metabolic activity
increase, etc. This gives them the increased energy
to either run from the threat or face it. Any
compound that elicits the same reaction in the body
is called "sympathicomimetic." It revs up the
sympathetic nervous system. These are the
stimulatory weight-loss ingredients. An example of
these would be the ephedrine alkaloids found in
Ephedra. Part of the cascade reaction of the
sympathetic nervous system results in thermogenesis.
The body stores fatty acids as "triglycerides,"
also called "triacylglycerol." This is formed by
three fatty acids attached to a glycerol molecule.
In order for the body to get energy from fat, the
fatty acid must be removed from the glycerol through
"hydration" and then the fat is broken down through
"lipolysis."
Lipolysis is the biochemical breakdown of fatty
acid for the purpose of creating energy. This occurs
through the use of oxygen. It is a heat-sensitive
process that occurs more readily at higher
temperatures. When the core body temperature is

process is called "thermogenesis."
